Blogger Denise Saywer: It's Georgia Blueberry Season!

Wholesome Mommy blogger, Denise Sawyer:

It's Georgia Blueberry season!  Finally, the snow is melting away, the sun is warm on my face and I can’t wait to get out in that spring weather to play in the dirt each afternoon.

This spring, I’ve already been getting my own little garden ready by pulling weeds, bringing in some new dirt, and buying a few plants.  This year, I’m replacing a few blueberry bushes that didn’t make it (I think the dog had something to do with that), planting some strawberry plants and a small vegetable garden to grow some of my family’s own organic veggies. There is something soul satisfying about growing your own food.

But, in the meantime, we can’t wait to get our hands on Georgia Blueberries at our local grocery store or farmer’s market.  This week marks the first week of their availability so we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for what I consider “nature’s candy.”  My kids love them and no matter how many little boxes I buy, they seem to blow through them long before we make another trip to the store.

We have all heard that blueberries are packed with antioxidants by now, but did you know that one serving also delivers 25% of your daily requirement of vitamin C?  Blueberries also contain important flavonoids like kaempferol and quercetin.  Kaempferol is believed to inactivate carcinogens and reduce LDL {bad} cholesterol.  Quercetin has the ability to protect against heart disease, cancer, and possibly cataracts.  It may also alleviate symptoms of asthma and allergies!

So, while blueberries are delicious, they are also good for you! Why not figure out how to fit a few more into your diet while they are around for a few short months?  If you need a few ideas to get you started, check out the Georgia Blueberry website.  They have tons of great ideas!
